The MP3 format is a compression system for music. The audio files recorded in MP3 format are saved with the .mp3 extension. Invented in the early 90's, t
he MP3 format owes its incredible popularity to one basic fact: it puts music into manageable files which can be downloaded over an Internet connection. The MP3 format helps reduce the number of bytes in a song without hurting the quality of the song's sound. The goal of the MP3 format is to compress a CD-quality song by a factor of 10 to 14 without noticably affecting the CD-quality sound.
The sound quality of any given MP3 file depends on a number of factors, including the quality of the original audio source. The encoding software used to create the file is also important. MP3 files encoded at higher bitrates generally offer better sound quality. Once you have an encoded MP3 file, you need a decoder or player (mobile phone with built-in decoder) to convert encoded MP3 data into something you can listen to. The MP3 audio format was not originally developed for mobile phones and ringtones. Nowadays many mobile phones support MP3 music files and ringtones.
Many free MP3 ringtones available on the internet can be illegal and/or subject to some copyright restrictions.
NOTE: some operators have "locked" their cell phones so that you cannot transfer or upload MP3 music to your mobile.
